The Hero's Coffin - Chapter 5

Previous | Index | Next Original publish date: 09/29/2024 __________________________________________   In the end, Harenir slightly shook his head, and Kalterik let me go as if he was throwing me aside. He glared at me, grumbling as if he were deeply ashamed of having been reprimanded by the captain.  “Consider it an honor. How could someone like you get a chance to be in the company of a hero? Researching necromancy in a peaceful world built on sacrifice, what a luxury to have. And in the Holy Empire, too…” Could it be that the reason I got so many bumps and bruises from being carried out of prison wasn’t because they were in a rush, but because of Kalterik’s hostility towards me? It was a reasonable suspicion to have. Even now, I almost toppled over, barely holding on to a tree just to keep my balance. Kalterik, thinking once again that he was being ignored, kept talking. About the history of the empire, blah, blah, and so on.  Suddenly, Harenir turned to us again....

I have to make sure you don’t run off on your own, right?” When Harenir waved his hand around a little, the red cord swayed gently in the air with it, and I could feel the vibration directly on my neck. It seemed like he could make the ‘cord’ appear at will whenever he wanted to, and it could be used as a means to rein me in. “If you act against my will, I’ll activate the device around your neck, and your head will go bang—and explode. I would be careful about what I do if I were you. Oh, and if you try to take it off by force, it’ll also explode.”  “...” “No matter where you try to run, as long as you wear this collar, you’ll always be dragged back to me. So don’t get any ideas. What would we do if you were to get needlessly hurt after wandering a little too far?”  His voice full of concern was extremely gentle. His eyes softened as if he was w...

The Hero's Coffin - Chapter 3

Previous | Index | Next Original publish date: 08/10/2024 __________________________________________ Fwooosh —the night wind blew softly. The figure walked toward me, his footsteps inaudible, and removed the hood of his robe. His dazzling blonde hair fluttered gently with the breeze and shimmered in the moonlight. His eyes were as blue as the clear skies on an autumn day. One might feel as though they were truly looking up at the heavens when getting lost in the stare of those eyes. His soft gaze, his gentle smile, and the benevolent yet watchful air he carried around him. Everything about him made him look like a saint. Even the slight glow around the man, his back facing the bright moon, seemed to contain a bit of holiness to it.  I’d never seen such a beautiful face before, it left me flustered. It was like I was witnessing a divine figure in the flesh. The holy atmosphere was so overwhelming that it even evoked a strange sense of resistance within me. Perhaps it was the intui...

The Hero's Coffin - Chapter 2

Previous | Index | Next Original publish date: 08/08/2024 __________________________________________ They say the most common reaction when confronted with a shocking reality is denial. As such, I was stuck in a decent amount of denial. Maybe I was dying and left stuck in a dream, or maybe I was in a coma and living in a strange fantasy.  I quickly pinched my arm hard hoping to wake up from this ridiculous dream, but all it did was leave me with quite a bit of pain. This body was even more malnourished than my old one, I could barely feel any tissue between the skin and bones when pinching.  It didn’t even hurt when I got hit by a truck earlier, so why would merely pinching my skin hurt so vividly in comparison? Why was this my reality? I’ve read novels where people transmigrate into the role of an mistreated illegitimate child of a noble family or even the role of a servant or slave, but I’m a death row inmate set to die tomorrow? A chilling scenario began to play out in my...
